Local Information
Welcome to Southport. Not one of the other Southports found in Australia, Canada, USA or South Africa, but the original Southport, formally in Lancashire, now in the Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England.
This lively and historic town is located on the Irish Sea coast, 16.5 miles (26.6 km) north of Liverpool and 14.8 miles (23.8 km) southwest of Preston. Situated in an area boasting some 20 miles of sand dunes and wide beaches, Southport offers activities for all ages, from sailing to bird-watching, nature and squirrel walks, kite flying and sailing, and of course the more sedate hobby – shopping.
Shopping
The town’s most famous landmark is probably Lord Street, a tree-lined Victorian boulevard, offering covered walkways for rain-free shopping days. All the well known high-street brands are here, as well as many individual and unique shops.
In addition to Lord Street, Southport also boasts other Victorian Arcades, such as Wayfarers Arcade, Cambridge Walks and Marble Place. And new to the town is the shopping and leisure complex, Ocean Plaza, situated just beside the beach. Here, you can shop, watch a film in the multi-plex cinema, go ten-pin bowling, eat from an array of international restaurants, and even stay the night in a choice of hotels!
Add to all that a traditional indoor market, a monthly farmers market and regular Continental Markets, and Southport has some of the best shopping around.
Events
Every year, Southport hosts a great variety of special events, which attract visitors from all over the world. Events such as:

- The Air Show and Military Display;
- The Musical Fireworks Competition;
- Comedy Week;
- The Food Festival;
- North West Motor Show;
- Summer Classics Concert;
- 24 Hour Yacht Race.

Children
Southport is an ideal destination for children. The area around Marine Lake offers a host of child-friendly attractions, such as crazy golf, boating, a miniature village and railway and other park facilities. Just across the road from Marine Lake is the new Splash World complex, providing high-tech swimming facilities including water rides, fountains, tunnels, slides and river-rapids.
Entertainment
Looking for a fun night out? Southport is now home to a brand-new Theatre and Convention Centre. With shows ranging from Jimmy Carr to Scooby Doo, as well as an annual Panto, there is always something to see at the theatre. In addition, Ocean Plaza has a Vue multiplex cinema, and Southport is also home to the Little Theatre, which puts on a variety of plays throughout the year.
And after your show? Choose from a myriad of popular restaurants, on Lord Street, Ocean Plaza and all the streets in between.
Nature
Southport is also home to a variety of more “natural” activities. The coastline provides excellent facilities for bird watching; in particular, the RSPB have a Nature Reserve at Marshside, which is considered to be one of the most important reserves in the country for winter wildlife; further away from the town are other reserves such as Mere Sands and Martin Mere Wildlife and Wetland Trust.
To the south is the town of Formby, home to some of the few remaining Red Squirrels left in the UK. These can be viewed by walking through the National Trust woods, which themselves lead into the dramatic sand dunes, which offer nature lovers even more opportunities to explore plants and birds.
